this is going to definitely bring out the trumpnadians

LeakySkylight

It already is. About 90 people have commented on the North Island in one feed about how this is like apartheid or nazi Germany. The number of people of privilege complaining about having to help their fellow man is disheartening.

CaptnoftheNoFunDept

Not just complaining about having to help their fellow man, but also equating their *decision* to someone else's racial or ethnic identity. It's ludicrous to compare being denied privileges for failing to uphold the social contract to being persecuted for something inherent to a person or group which they can't control or change. As a society, we have been denying privileges to those who don't uphold the social contract for most of the collective historical experience. Why should these be any different?

LeakySkylight

I'm going to share a link to another comment that explains: https://www.reddit.com/r/onguardforthee/comments/pbati9/report_ontario_plans_to_implement_oppressive_new/hac13j1?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 > They (people of privlidge) enjoyed a life of doing whatever they want, while, barriers were put up for others. Now, a barrier, however small, is put up to them and they can't take it. I think this describes it exactly. > It's ludicrous to compare being denied privileges for failing to uphold the social contract to being persecuted for something inherent to a person or group which they can't control or change. A little bit of short term pressure has showed people what they are really made of.

SappyCedar

I've also seen it bring out lots of "alternative medicine" hippy types. A guy I sort of know is sort of like this, otherwise very progressive but with very odd ideas about the nature of the world and medicine and owns a business that kind of aligns with that crowd. He recently made a post on his Instagram comparing the vaccine and mask rules to the extermination of 6 million Jews by the Nazis, I was extremely disgusted by the comparison and had to just unfollow the dude cause I can't stand seeing that crap in my feed.

Several_Amphibian666

Paul is trash. I witnessed him firing an elderly lady(named Diane if anyone remembers her, what a sweetheart) for not showing up for a shift. She tried booking it off numerous times to go see a doctor, an appointment she couldn't reschedule. Found out later it had to do with cancer. He would sexually harass a woman Baker who owned her own cake shop(the cake lady, I think it was called) and rented out his prep kitchen until she had enough and found a new kitchen. He sexually harassed a woman prep cook at taco justice to the point where the food trucked decided to move locations and find a new kitchen because of Paul's antics. I've over heard him talking about the type of porn he watches, using the n word numerous times and overall being a trashy guy. I'm sure if you ask around the community, numerous people will come forward.

nrtphotos

The food is absolutely terrible, too. Most of the baking is Costco stuff, and I’ve had moldy food twice.

Several_Amphibian666

All Costco food, his freezer and fridges were disgusting. Nothing was wrapped, it was all freezer burnt.

bigfishflakes

The food is pretty oily and salty. Also got some intel that he is not welcome at the DiVinci center. And he's Itallian! Mama Mia!

canadanimal

Who is Paul.

Several_Amphibian666

The owner of melting moments catering and Guido's cafe in Esquimalt

data_err0r

I know of a gym doing this as well. I don't get it. This is a mandate, not a choice. Even if you're someone who agrees with what they're doing surely you can see this is literally just letting the health authority know who to shut down immediately? What a weird flex. For those asking: https://www.instagram.com/tfagym/?hl=en The Fitness Academy

MileZeroC

Stay away from that gym. The owner is a bit of a creep.

data_err0r

Really? I know a few people that went there before covid. What kinda shit has he done?

MileZeroC

SurvivorStories had a few comments about Dave Puhky, the owner.

rando-3456

I do remember that, knew the name sounded familiar when the other commenter posted it

qrupert

Thanks for letting us know, the owner is a survivor stories project creep as well. Tough to leave them feedback since they're deleting comments. I suggest leaving a google review here instead https://www.google.com/search?q=the+fitness+academy&oq=the+fitness+ac#lrd=0x548f73611f7bad87:0x58e917f1326af99e,1,,,

N01S0N

It happened a lot in Ontario actually. Not only with masks but with the shutdown, quite a few businesses stayed open and took ticket after ticket just to say fuck you

rando-3456

What gym? If they've posted publicly surely you can post here?

data_err0r

https://www.instagram.com/tfagym/?hl=en The Fitness Academy

rando-3456

Good to know, thank you!

SkullySmurf

Woah, another local gym liked that post. Did not see that one coming.

rando-3456

Why did you edit your comment? In my notification it said Crossfit something liked that post now it just says "another local gym"

DoddersEspinosa

It was Crossfit Lolo.

SkullySmurf

Because I'm hoping they're just experiencing a lapse in judgement by liking the post and felt like giving them the benefit of the doubt. But I'm truly gobsmacked to see their name attached to this.

_ohbananas

Removed. My intent was unfortunately not the same as the impact and therefore I apologize.

nulspace

OK, this is important: Just this morning I saw some random asshole accost the owner/barista at Dolce Vita Yates (who is a wonderful guy), alleging that the owner was "anti-vaxx, anti-mask". This happened **while the owner was wearing a mask**. You know what the asshole cited as the reason he was accosting Dolce's owner? **Reading this very reddit comment by /u/_ohbananas**. It's one thing to call out businesses that actively defy the PHO, it's another thing entirely to start witch-hunting campaigns against people or businesses who are following the rules just because they *might* not agree with those rules. Don't be thought police! /u/_ohbananas I urge you to delete your comment or at the very least make it clear that you aren't suggesting those businesses aren't following the PHO mandate.

oddette725

I’d believe that. I know the silent partner though his girlfriend. They’ve both yet to be vaccinated but he’s a step up anti-vaccine.

ubersteiny

What gym is that?

data_err0r

https://www.instagram.com/tfagym/?hl=en The Fitness Academy

ubersteiny

Thanks for the link. They must be actively deleting comments on that post because I don't see a single negative comment on it.

Kilcona

If I test positive for COVID can I isolate and eat there? I hope I won't be 'discrimate' against for my medical choices at that point, would be an interesting question for the owner.

Horace-Harkness

Sure. They aren't going to ask you if you are infections. And it's not like you'll get any sicker by going there.

[deleted]

Wonderful. Restaurants advertising that they won't follow health regulations. Great. What about that, for a slippery slope?

sinep_snatas

This is analogous to taking a flight with a few hundred people on board, walking up to the pilot and saying "I need to land this thing. I've watched a couple of youtube videos and you are wrong".

BlameThePeacock

I wonder if they would serve me if I walk in nude. Freedom of choice right?

[deleted]

scottishlastname

blackandcopper

C'mon, don't be such a pussy.

StackLeeAdams

They hate us 'cause they anus

AngryJawa

Freedom of choice works both ways you know right? Businesses that are against the order want to have the freedom of choice to serve whoever they want without discrimination. People also want to have the freedom of choice to eat out without having to take the vaccine. I'm all for #1 as I don't think it's the job of businesses to "enforce" the governments vaccine program.... As for #2, I think people should just fucking get the vaccine so we can get back to normal.... I'm pissed off the Funk Hunters show got cancelled :(

BlameThePeacock

I was mocking freedom of choice thing off their Facebook post. They list a bunch of protected rights, followed by a new one they made up that isn't in any way protected in Canada. Discrimination laws in Canada are very clear, you have to be a member of a protected class. Those classes are clearly outlined, and nowhere do they include vaccination status or personal choices. If you meant the business facing discrimination from the government, they aren't protected at all. "race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability or conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted or in respect of which a record suspension has been ordered." [https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/h-6/fulltext.html#:\~:text=3%20(1)%20For%20all%20purposes,which%20a%20pardon%20has%20been](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/h-6/fulltext.html#:~:text=3%20(1)%20For%20all%20purposes,which%20a%20pardon%20has%20been) Restaurants have to follow a lot of regulations to operate, they enforce government programs all the time from obvious things like the drinking age all the way through to automatic deductions for the Canadian pension plan. You want to operate a business in Canada, you follow the laws in Canada. The health orders are essentially laws, they have the power of laws, and they are allowed because there are laws specifically providing for the creation of health orders.

AngryJawa

Health orders are extremely reaching these days. The government is being spineless and forcing businesses to deal with the unvaxxed, instead of finding ways for themselves to encourage vaccination rates.

BlameThePeacock

Carrot was already used, it's now time for the stick. This is a way to encourage vaccination rates.

Chickenator007

A FB group called "Van Isle Businesses Against Health Pass" was recently created. If anyone is curious about businesses that are not in support of the health pass and has concerns about which businesses are taking your health into consideration.... https://m.facebook.com/groups/377480873961022?group_view_referrer=search

SkullySmurf

Thank you. Taking notes for where not to spend my paycheque from now on.

ragecuddles

So moronic. Do their staff wash their hands? Do they handle raw chicken next to cooked food? Health regulations exist for a reason and comparing that to gender/race discrimination shows a pretty huge lack of intelligence. Also as someone that had to wear pressure garments for a bad burn as a small child - are masks really that big of a deal?

_ohbananas

There's [this](https://www.instagram.com/vancouverislandinclusive/) Instagram account that i'm watching (not following) to see which businesses to avoid. Edited to add: the following businesses have liked Sunnyside's post: *Removed business accounts liking Sunnyside's post due to people harassing those businesses.* ***If you don't agree with these businesses decisions/social media likes, show them by not giving them your business. DO NOT HARASS, BULLY THEM.*** Edit #2: Urban Forage in the Atrium, Little Shop of Strange have posted in a FB group they will not comply with orders. Edit #3: Art of Slow Food, Incendiary Tattoos, Lucky Cat Barber, Electric City Sound Studio, Cobblestone Pub & Liquor Store are all against the vaccination passport. Info grabbed from Instagram and FB.

BuddhaChrist_ideas

Why are consumer product businesses making statements about not complying? Proof isn't required to shop. Masks are. The vaccine mandate is for discretionary activities - i.e indoor public leisure activities (bars, restaurants, movies, concerts.. etc.)

nrckrmdrb

>Because we live in a reactionary society where most people are just plain ignorant to reality

BuddhaChrist_ideas

Too true. My sister posted all over Instagram how she was losing her job because of the vaccine mandates - her being against vaccines for whatever vogue reason she follows weekly. I (a fully vaccinated and vaccine supporting individual) told her that the mandates had nothing to do with employment, only discretionary use activities. She didn't know that, because she didn't actually read the article let alone understand what the vaccine passports meant. I'm guessing somebody posted something on social media saying all the unvaccinated are going to lose their jobs, and it confirmed her bias and she believed it without question. It's scary. The correct information is out there and readily accessible by anyone, but some people just don't have the capacity to filter it.

I noticed that too ha ha. So many “wellness mamas” with bleach blonde hair. Usually means selling diet teas or shakes that give you the shits and then call it weight loss or essential oil bullshit.

[deleted]

Rata-toskr

Seriously, why are women seemingly so much more inclined to buy into "woo" bullshit? e.g. healing crystals, astrology, cleanses etc.

[deleted]

Women have "woo", Men have Joe Rogan. It's just as prolific amongst men, it's just advertised differently.

occidental_oriental

Because it's marketed directly to them.

Quail-a-lot

Probably because doctors do not listen to us. I'm not into woo, but I did have to deal with cancer a lot longer than I should have because doctors kept dismissing it. And then when they removed the (very, very painful) tumour and the biopsy came back and showed that it was in fact not benign they were basically like "Oh, oopsie! Come back and get that checked on!" and then look at me like I am nuts when I go back for my routine check ups every few years like they told me to.

Rata-toskr

Your experience is not unique to women. Doctors in general seem not to trust the opinions of their patients, to a degree I understand why.

Lucretius91

My wife is a STEM grad and she's almost immune but pumpkin spice is back so there goes her brain.

[deleted]

And hair stylists and photographers. Sigh.

NonChillFiltered

I think I'm going to have to grow my hair out again. The thought of an unvaccinated barber breathing on me right now is disgusting.

Morkum

Both Mitch and Adam at Len Fraser Barber in Esquimalt are vaxxed. I know this because we ended up chatting about it last time I was there. They are also really good and fairly cheap.

NonChillFiltered

It's a bit of an echo chamber yeah, not a total one though thankfully but certainly a very different environment than the actual general population.

greene_r

its a nice list of businesses for me to avoid lol

Where did you see that West Coast Appliances liked it?

_ohbananas

[Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/CTAPyxNFaLc/)

omghowdareyou

Oh nice. I won't bother going there when I'm appliance shopping this weekend. Lots of better options that care about their customers.

cptpedantic

let them know, maybe even send them a pic of the receipt to show 'em what they missed and why

teamcannabis

i'm building a couple of new homes that need appliances,I won't be going to their store either

nrckrmdrb

Always Home Depot my friend. They have the best price match policy and always have extended warranties with minimal hassle. I'm a former co-op student with a major appliance company and from my experience I would personally not shop at West Coast.

PuzzleWizard13

Lol they spelt discriminate wrong

'let's provide inclusivity for all' ...except immunocompromised people This shit's honestly too funny, what a bunch of weirdos.

[deleted]

Internet_Jim

Immunocompromised people can get vaccinated, and are expected to. There are no religious or medical exemptions to the vaccine mandate that the BC government is rolling out.

ChefCezo

But immumocompromised people can be vaccinated....at least the ones I know can and have been.

JhdoraBCB

I am immunocompromised. I have both my vaccinations. Didn't have any issues, side effects at all. Had a sore arm for a day or two. The people out there claiming they can't be vaccinated are spouting dumb rhetoric that they read online. I have been doing my part to stay masked in public spaces and I will continue to until I am told it is safe to remove them. But even then I have little interest in being close to people that could potentially be spreading something that I don't want.

woundtighter

They absolutely can and were prioritized... Clinically Extremely Vulnerable...

askboo

Not surprised about Darcy’s, that place wasn’t following guidelines even during the first wave.

wisely_and_slow

I will say, I was deeply disappointed when I tried Hidden Gem. It may just have been what I ordered, but it seemed like they follow the "people with food restrictions don't like good food so we can give them subpar food and they'll be happy for it" line of thinking.

eternalrevolver

Lifestyles Market is a grocer

_ohbananas

Yep! and according to the [current PHO order](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/info/restrictions#masks) requiring you to wear a mask indoors, grocery stores are included.

eternalrevolver

Oh sorry, I thought OP was referencing the vaccine passport mandate.

BuddhaChrist_ideas

Yeah, the mask mandate is non-negotiable, but the vaccine mandate doesn't include regular shopping.

madmansmarker

hey for what it’s worth, darcy’s west shore said the like was unintentional and has said they intend to follow all health laws as necessary.

viccitylivin

What fb group is that ?

_ohbananas

It's called "BC Businesses against Health Pass".

GalianoGirl

The Cobblestone states on their Facebook page that masks are back, so I am not sure where you got your information?

_ohbananas

They did state that and then the owner posted [this](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1302143960224863/posts/1303203970118862) in a Facebook group that lists businesses that are against public health orders.

I mean, I'm cool with them going out of business.

dawnat3d

maybe they should hand back all the covid handouts they took over the past 1.5 year

Perhaps they should.

That page is depressing. How can people be so selfish and stupid. > I'm having bad anxiety today. Because my e.i is running out and I'm against taking the shot and what if no one hires me. I'm so scared for my kids not being able to even eat

ghostfacr

The worst part is seeing how many of my Facebook friends have joined and are parroting this shit

fannyflambo

It's a miserable hole in the wall and all of the ingredients are WalMart's Great Value brand. Also he has a rep in the community of being a walking dumpster. It's Esquimalt's only breakfast joint and locals are super obsessed with supporting local business at any cost. The second a new breakfast place opens Sunnyside will be ditched and left to rot. Bunny's does beautiful breakfast items but does have limited seating. I'd suggest going there. And the owner is absolutely terrific. Plus, it's opposite our amazing ECAH.

DashBC

Won't the health authority shut them down?

HERITAGE_GLORY_HOLE

Bold move by them posting this to social media, I hope we get a good update here about them being fined or otherwise shut down.

-retaliation-

Oh we'll get an update Of them crying out about "how could the government shut us down for exercising my rights, why would they do this to us!?" As if they didn't blatently shoot themselves in the foot.

smithee2001

I can already hear the Curb Your Enthusiasm tune.

SkullySmurf

WCB will probably ride in and shut them down. I don't understand why any of them think this is a good idea. It's just completely moronic.

cabdro

Yup

DashBC

Good stuff. So they're effectively boycotting themselves in the process. Good riddance. Wonder if they think other health ordinances should be refused as well? Like why bother cleaning? Nice precedent from this brain trust.

NonChillFiltered

Washing hands after using bathroom optional but recommended.

DashBC

Maybe Sunnyside thinks not washing enhances the flavour, it's their secret sauce. "Oh yum, Bill obviously prepared this dish! He hasn't washed his hands in weeks and I can tell!" Next we'll get to enjoy broken glass as well.

Sportsinghard

How about they give back the covid loans you know they received

DashBC

Nice. 🏆

Calvinshobb

I’ll certainly be calling them.

oceancalled

DroppedThatBall

Ugh that fb page of businesses not complying with mandates is giving me some big america MUH RIGHTS feelings. It's gross. But at least now I know where to avoid.

_flateric

I don’t think they’ll have a choice. Imagine they didn’t uphold the laws on smoking, these people are nuts.

thedepartedloaf

That place was trash anyway. I tried to love it. I wanted to love it. As a lifelong Esquimalt resident, I really wanted there to be somewhere close to my apartment that I could go to for a hungover bite to eat. But I can't support a business with a blatant disregard for public safety. I tried going there last fall but only one or two of the front facing staff members were masked up even though most every other restaurant was requiring staff to be masked. The kitchen staff had no masks and didn't even cover their mouth during a sneeze and just kind of sneezed into the air sorta away from the food they were cooking. The kicked is that they didnt even wash their hands after. In the middle of a fucking pandemic? Come on. Makes you wonder what other things they are skimping on in terms of health and safety. Disgusting.

dawnat3d

yeah, I stopped going there a long time ago for the same sort of reasons. It’s just gross.

therealmoec

Personally I think it would be more impactful if they still had people coming in, but those people immediately turn around after seeing the COVID policy and leaving. Let the owners see their business walking away

vermouth55

I don’t see how you can compare discriminating against people of colour, gender, martial status, etc…. to people who CHOOSE not to help kick this virus’s ass? People deciding not to get vaccinated is a choice and doesn’t fall under the umbrella of discrimination.

PritosRing

When no customers come in, they'll be asking for more tips to stay afloat. I hope they sink.

LeakySkylight

We have a really good restaurant that's decided to do this up island. The Public Health unit will most likely be pulling their licenses.

[deleted]

At my workplaces we wear our masks with pride and we all are excited to be vaccine buddies too We all really take the safety of our customers meals very seriously Lots of people in food are deadly serious about upholding the maximum amount of safety for our clients It make me sad to see their ideals fall so far from what wholesome food and service should be Good cooks servers and food places take health orders very seriously

NonChillFiltered

If this is a restaurant, please PM the name so I make sure to try it out.

[deleted]

Nah bud i guarantee this is across the industry except at the very few places that won't Id If it checks Id the people inside gonna support that so like basically all places except a few I have a very high opinion of folk who manage to stay open and still put food out so yeah whatever looks good and has Id at the door after 13 !

DoddersEspinosa

Restaurant name please? That sounds like the kind of place I want to support.

[deleted]

Just call me cook #1 at random local place that ids at the door I prefer to stay private, just try some different places out after the 13 flash your card and maybe it will be me cooking for yu or maybe one of my cohorts in the industry. The reason they aren't making mandates for kitchen and etc workers to be vaccinated is we all already are man it's a point of pride to plate safe yummy food and that's across the amazing food industry in Victoria and rbe surrounding area of bc if it ids at the door it's gonna have folk like me inside go support local We don't need a list of bad places it will be simple as checking the door process at a place and then we can all easily as citizens ensure our health and safety by glance at the door of a place and I expect it to be universal

Chance_Park_2628

THIS. I mean if a place already knows what is required to keep a food place safe would already be on board.

LeakySkylight

The Ideal Cafe in Campbell River is too. The numbers are low on the Island until they're not, at which time it'll be too late to do anything. Mind you, that's the whole point, to stop this thing before it gets so bad our ERs are non-functional, like they are in parts of the interior.

sm072998

Along with most of the gyms in CR posting that they won’t be following the orders either...sus lol

ezumadrawing

May they all be shut down

omdesign123

I feel like they did this just to get 15 minutes of local fame in CHEK news lmao. What a bunch of morons. Can’t wait for that list👍

Can’t they be fined or something?

SnippySnapsss

They can be shut down. PHO orders are law.

SkullySmurf

OMG, what?! I'm so disappointed in the Sunnyside! What the heck...I love that place....FFS.

It's gotta be exhausting for the government to put up with business owners like this.

Uniperv

Just remember that not all anti-vaxxers are Albertan. They lurk in your own back yard too.

infidelkastro

Apparently, they don't discrimate.

occidental_oriental

They cater to all kinds of stupid

Ooutoout

Oh nooo! I loved that place.

Stormtoquer

I’m sure their replacement will be even better. Lol.

SkeletonCrew_

We have an effective vaccine that makes our personal risk of serious disease or death close to zero. Children, while unable to be vaccinated right now, also have insignificant risk of serious disease. The main risk we face now is that unvaccinated people will clog the ICU. **I have a simple, singular proposal: admission to ICU will require your vaccine record** Forget vaccine passports for restaurants, forget masking up unnecessarily. Everybody wins with my simple proposal, with some side benefits as well: - Anti-vaxxers believe it is nonsense and they will happily waive their right for ICU treatment they don't believe they need - The rest of us can live our lives normally - A slight population reduction in the 25% who won't get vaccinated will mean parks will be less crowded and housing prices won't skyrocket so fast - We'll eliminate a bunch of stupid people - All of this will be accomplished by application of fair and transparent libertarian principles which respect people's intrinsic right to choose on matters that primarily impact their own personal outcomes

Let's take it one step further, let's test for antibodies since the vaccine doesn't work very well in some individuals so we should add them to your list too. Oh and smokers, because smoking during a pandemic of a respiratory virus increases risk too. Actually, anything that increases your risk of needing healthcare should get you banned from that care so that it's available for everyone else.

We don't deny cancer treatment to smokers. We don't deny narcan to drug users who have overdosed. We don't deny treatment to type 2 diabetics who at fault for their condition. I have seen this type of comment a lot lately. It sounds psychopathic.

Frodo_Lives21

Can't tell if this is satire in the mode of Jonathan Swift or if you are just a nazi. Please advise...

I feel like restaurants are probably sick of getting shit on by the government for the past year. Especially since now they will have to be checking each patrons vaccine card and enforcing. I imagine it is difficult.

sewage

Just as difficult as checking ID when selling alcohol

Time-Ad-5038

Yes so I’m sure bars will have no problem with this as they’re used to IDIng at the door. But a breakfast place isn’t so used to idIng everybody who enters, just those who orders caesars. So it adds a certain degree to difficulty

TheHemogoblin

Then I guess it's time to get used to it then, isn't it?

rajde1

Doesn’t that place serve alcohol? I remember them coming into the liquor store as a licensee.

SnippySnapsss

They do.

GuidotheGreater

Hi can I help you? Table for 2 please. Can I see your vaccine cards please? Ok. I know we like to slag on minimum wage workers on this sub but I'm pretty sure they can be trained to ask a simple question.

I think these businesses are starting to come out in the open, so they can be shut down, and garner support to launch a judicial review. The new regulations are far too broad, and for many people the thought of a Covid-19 passport is a step too far even for those who've been vaccinated.
