Thanks for sending this in! I struggle to write in because... It feels like screaming into a void. Like a health specialist appointment, it takes 2+ months to hear back from Horgan's office. What gives? So frustrating.

Revolutionary-Win-51

It is screaming into the void and almost useless but it is good to at least go through the motions and will at the very least give you some sense of catharsis. I emailed many elected and unelected officials during the first few months of COVID admonishing them for not taking the new coronavirus coming out of Wuhan seriously, keeping the borders open, not mandating masks and more. It took months before I got canned responses (if I did at all) but it is certainly funny to look back at these and how poorly they aged. It makes more sense to point your criticism directly at the involved parties than to just keep it on your social media or online.

GeoffwithaGeee

everything gets looked at, so there is that. the issue is that the premier's office will send the letter to the ministry which is most appropriate, then the minister will assign it to a branch, then someone in that branch will work with an analyst and possibly directors/executive directors to write a response, then it goes back up the chain to be sent out, or just sent out from that branch. It's very similar for NDP MLA's, they just ask for wording from the ministries/branches that deal with the subject, and then write back. I think opposition MLA's are on their own, but I could be wrong. However, would you want someone to write your letter that actually knows the answers and what is going on, or just someone in an office that is a few times removed from people dealing with the situation? No one in the premier's office really deals directly with the Police/RCMP, the Pacheedaht Nation, or logging licenses for the example of Fairy Creek situation. Also, the letter from the OP may be ignored because it's touching on so many things and just venting, not really asking any questions. just "I'm disappointed and here is why" which is perfectly fine to write in and say, but a response wouldn't really make sense and take way too long to get in to for each point that it wouldn't be worth it.

Pahalial

Thanks for making your voice heard and encouraging others to do the same! Democracy doesn't stop at the ballot box :)

Successful_Sugar1987

Good for you regardless of your views everyone should write there MLA. Good Rule is if you care enough to whine about it online, write your MLA instead, Citizens would be represented much more accurately if everyone did it

sitkapacific

The BC NDP is as united now as they have ever been. I think the party just left you over time, and its time to come to grips that you are a green party member now. With your help they might be able to get to half the support of the 2nd place party

parkleswife

The provincial NDP has always tried to straddle the line between resource extractors and environmentalists. It's always been messy.

[deleted]

For the 15 years before they were elected they were just trying to be whatever the Liberals weren't. True colours come out when you're in power.

GeoffwithaGeee

its just the game of politics, it's the "opposition party" so they will oppose almost anything because that's why they are there for. But that's a good thing, you want someone questioning decisions whether they would be doing the same in the same situation.

[deleted]

I get that but it would be refreshing to hear someone say "this is actually a good policy and similar to what we would do" like, at least once in a while. We don't pay them to act like children and oppose whatever the leadership party does, only to act the same way when they are in power.

GeoffwithaGeee

they do say that, but their job is to scrutinize anything the party in power does so nothing can slip by and the public is also in the know (if they care). MLA's also speak on behalf of their constituents, so opposition members regularly use constituent situations/letters as questions during question period to oppose whatever the power in Party is doing. The estimate debates are a bit more technical, and a lot more boring than question period on the floor (which is already super boring to most people), but it's bit more "civilized" in that they will ask questions about various programs and get in to the details with the lens of scrutiny. in both situations I have heard praise from the opposition, sometimes right after them grilling about a certain aspect or cost of that program.

sexywheat

I am not fond of the Green party in any capacity. I'll likely be voting for the Communist Party next election, if they run in my riding.

thebadguy1980

well thats a logical thing to go and do

[deleted]

😂

[deleted]

>I'll likely be voting for the Communist Party next election, if they run in my riding. ...what? Why? Just as a protest?

sexywheat

“As a protest” No, because I’m a communist

polski4829

That's hilarious

[deleted]

Interesting. One of the "it's just never been tried properly before" kind?

sexywheat

No, more of a “Cuba is an exemplary model of social development even under a crushing embargo” and “all of the most successful economies in terms of output and growth in the 20th and 21st centuries have been planned economies” kind

smashed2bitz

Read a newspaper. The people of Cuba are revoling. They hate their government! Wow. You really know how to pick em. Next you'll say how much you love the Taliban because of their effectiveness in taking over a whole country.

[deleted]

There are countries with great social development that aren't communist. How do you deal with less pleasant aspects of communism, like no other ideology in the modern world has caused more suffering and death? I'm really curious how someone can look at communism's record and think "yeah... that looks appealing,"

sexywheat

"There is talk of the failure of socialism, but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and in Latin America? " "There is often talk of human rights, but it is also necessary to talk of the rights of humanity. Why should some people walk barefoot, so that others can travel in luxurious cars? Why should some live for thirty-five years, so that others can live for seventy years? Why should some be miserably poor, so that others can be hugely rich? I speak on behalf of the children in the world who do not have a piece of bread. I speak on the behalf of the sick who have no medicine, of those whose rights to life and human dignity have been denied." \-Fidel Castro

[deleted]

>"There is talk of the failure of socialism, but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and in Latin America? " Uh, what was china's economy like before they opened it up to capitalism? > "There is often talk of human rights, but it is also necessary to talk of the rights of humanity. Why should some people walk barefoot, so that others can travel in luxurious cars? Why should some live for thirty-five years, so that others can live for seventy years? Why should some be miserably poor, so that others can be hugely rich? I speak on behalf of the children in the world who do not have a piece of bread. I speak on the behalf of the sick who have no medicine, of those whose rights to life and human dignity have been denied." This is rich coming from Fidel because communist countries are the worst offenders of this massive disparity in poverty. Those within the party live high on the hog and everyone else is in abject poverty. There is no middle class. Cuba is a prison island. You are not allowed to leave. Ask the cuban defectors how they feel about communism. Have you been there? I have. It's disturbing. The people and culture are wonderful. But they are not happy. You can blame that on the embargo all you want but that's not the case.

yossarion22

How do you reckon with the dictatorship aspect of Cuba? Surely the people should have some say in their government?

sexywheat

[I’m so glad you asked](https://youtu.be/2aMsi-A56ds)

darkgree

Communists have had a pretty bad record on the environment, except in cases where the economy collapses.

sexywheat

China is rehabilitating desert and making new forests the size of South Korea and building twenty new zero emission nuclear power plants as of their last five year plan

darkgree

Fair point, those are good things. They have lots of other environmental issues but also have a massive population so it's not fully unexpected either. I was thinking of Russia - their environmental impact only went down when their economy did.

sexywheat

I don’t think any economy in the 20th century can hold its head up high with regards to environmental issues, communist, capitalist or otherwise.

[deleted]

They're also currently in the middle of conducting a genocide, they seized power over Hong Kong, they jail and disappear dissenting voices, they continue to prop up North Korea which is essentially a giant communist concentration camp, and they are in the middle of the largest expansion of world wide colonialism since WW2. I mean the west isn't perfect either but at least we aren't jailed for complaining about it.

smashed2bitz

No. We are just segregating society and marginalizing a large section of society over medical autonomy.

claymaker_1

Yes let's try to be like China 😅😅

I'm still mostly ok with the federal NDP, especially since Singh just came out in favour of [nationalising](https://www.reddit.com/r/ndp/comments/pauag7/jagmeet_singh_says_he_would_nationalize_revera_a/) for-profit long term care centres. It's been a long time since I heard the "n word" used by a party leader. The provincial NDP is all but dead to me though. They can still redeem themselves in my eyes if they pass card check, but they are unlikely to do even that.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp

Provincial and Federal NDP are the same party Edit: rustled some jimmies it looks like. If you’re a member of the provincial NDP they don’t allow you to be a member of any other *Federal* party and vice versa. Go ahead, check the requirements. That’d be some crazy overreach if they’re not the party! Same party, different branches.

darkgree

They aren't exactly the same party but they do have a lot of overlap and are closely affiliated.

havegotnorhythm

no they’re not - think of the bc liberals vs federal liberals

therealmoec

The BC libs and federal libs are not the same party. The BC NDP and federal NDP are affiliated though

bedoublenegative

Care to share the contacts for said MLA? I’d love to write in

BlameThePeacock

Check the BC legislative website, contact information for all MLAs in the province are available.

Calvinshobb

Thank you, Horgan is a turnip headed fool.

sitkapacific

Lol I have never seen someone repeat the same stupid line so often. Did a turnip hurt you as a kid or something

Calvinshobb

I read it on rvictoria and I thought omfg how have I not realized that’s exactly what he is. So I stole it.

Successful_Sugar1987

He does look like some sort of swollen red root vegetable 😂

KlausSlade

Someone in Langford should start a John Horgan recall campaign. The forms for recall are available on the elections BC website.

sexywheat

He should be replaced within the BC NDP, leadership referendum

Successful_Sugar1987

Anything, Less totalitarianism, give back freedom of choice and freedom to protest, its nuts

wwwabbit

I know, I wish they would properly fund the RCMP so they could get rid of those protestors properly.

Successful_Sugar1987

I hope they never target and stalk/victimize you or your family, i envy your ignorance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8gUhDd6WE

darkgree

You're blaming the police violence on under funding? The RCMP have plenty of resources on hand at Fairy Creek, they just keep going with the unlawful actions because no one's holding them accountable (yet). Things seem to be shifting a bit now but I'm not holding my breath.

Calvinshobb

I know an rcmp who has bought a luxury power boat and a new car just from the over time from this summer. The rcmp are milking this as largely as possible, they are all padding their vacation funds.

smashed2bitz

You KNOW this, eh? Prove it.

ArvinisTheAnarchist

Yeah, that'll surely do a fat lot... Maybe consider joining in more protests instead? Peaceful or not it's the only way to actually change things, they're not gonna listen otherwise.

sexywheat

Why not both

ArvinisTheAnarchist

Read my previous comment for the answer...

smashed2bitz

There are real problems going on in the world. Go fight for actual injustices and actual human suffering.
